Aneurysms

An aneurysm is a localized, abnormal dilation or ballooning of a blood vessel wall. This weakening of the blood vessel wall can occur in arteries or veins and can potentially lead to serious health complications if the vessel ruptures. Aneurysms can develop in various parts of the body, but they most commonly occur in the aorta (the large artery that carries blood from the heart) and in the brain.

Symptoms

  • Requires a medical diagnosis An AAA often grows slowly, without symptoms. As it grows, some people may notice a pulsating feeling near the navel. Pain in the back, stomach or side may be signs of impending rupture.
  • Can have no symptoms, but people may experience:
  • Pain areas: in the abdomen, back, or flank
  • Also common: nausea or pulsating abdominal mass
  • Abdominal pain
  • Leg pain and gangrene

Treatment

  • Endovascular repair of aneurysm minimally invasive preferred in old patient.
  • Open aneurysm repair more durable therefore preferred in young patients, requires specialized surgical skill.
